Buffets + Cabinets

Have you ever walked into a room in your home and felt like something is missing? Sometimes a furniture arrangement is practically perfect, but you want just one more piece to fill in an empty spot. Whether you’re designing a new space from scratch or adding a few finishing touches, west elm’s furniture is a big help in turning your dream room into a reality. Consoles, buffet tables, cabinets and bookcases all add subtle strokes of style exactly where you need them. Here are some console and buffet table decor ideas to inspire you.

Create vignettes throughout the home to express your personality. What are vignettes? In interior decorating, a vignette is an aesthetically pleasing group of items. It’s similar to a centerpiece except there aren’t any limits to the size of the grouping. A vignette can occupy an entire tabletop, or a small corner of the wall. Console tables are ideal canvases for designing and displaying your vignettes. Both the top surface and bottom shelves can hold gorgeous pieces that fit your home’s theme.

Want a few vignette tips? Don’t worry, it’s not hard at all. In fact, the right layout depends mostly on what feels right to you. Start by choosing your theme. If you want a beach villa look, choose glass containers with seashells, rope-inspired decor, model ships or even artwork with seaside motifs. Objects can vary a lot in size and still look awesome because of their common thread. For a Tuscan living room, use a rustic console table with natural wood tones and adorn it with old family photos, vintage artwork, classic books and wood or stone decorations. Try to include items of varying heights to fill the spaces in your imaginary photograph.

Console tables were born for accent walls. Their wide measurements and distinctive figure naturally grabs your attention. Use contrasting tones for an even stronger effect. For example, in an all-white living room, pick out a chocolate-colored or black console table to really stand out. Or use vibrant wall paint – like dark blue, bright red or tangerine – on a single wall, and place a white console table against it. Decorate with a striking vase or a large painting.

Want to add tons of sophistication to your entertainment space? Use a console table underneath your flat-screen TV. It provides space for speakers and media devices of course, but also for elegant decorations that fit the room’s design theme. For a hint of 1920s allure, add some black-and-white accent pieces along with touches of bright metal.

Bookcases are great for filling in empty spaces in the living room as well. Generally speaking, symmetrical arrangements are the easiest to work with, but the possibilities are endless since each living room is different. With a bookcase on either side of your accent wall, you can display just about anything you want your guests to see. Each shelf offers room for pictures, decorative objects, books – as decor – and plants. Tall and narrow bookcases take advantage of vertical space really well and are smart for decorating rooms with size limitations.

One spot that’s perfect for a console table, bookcase or glass cabinet is the area next to the foot of your staircase. With a wall sconce providing indirect lighting, your console table proudly displays reminders of your family’s heritage, or favorite collection items. On the practical side, it’s also a good spot for your telephone or daily organizer. A catchall gives you a spot to toss your keys after you get home from work. Console tables with drawers hold pieces of jewelry and makeup too; head out the door with calm and confidence in the morning. A wall mirror lets you take one last look at your outfit and makeup before you go.

In the dining room, a buffet table makes serving guests easier. It also adds a rich culinary air to the room – especially with accent lighting overhead – and gets company in the mood to eat. When the tabletop surface isn’t filled with piping hot and delicious meals, adorn it with fresh flowers to brighten up the space. Cookbooks feel right at home here.
