7 Helpful Tips to Organize a Laundry Room

As a utilitarian space, the laundry room is often the most neglected and disorganized room in the home. Since laundry room organization isn't a one-size-fits-all type of project, we at west elm have compiled a list of our best laundry room organization ideas. Keep reading for seven simple ways to make wash days fun.

1. Set Up a Folding Station

If your family does a lot of laundry, creating a folding station will help keep everyone's clothing organized. A simple folding station can be created by mounting a small section of countertop to the wall. If space in your laundry room is limited, consider attaching the counter to hinges so it can be folded down when not in use. Alternatively, you can place the countertop across the tops of a front-loading washer and dryer set to create a functional folding space. You can also iron clothing on the countertop, eliminating the need for an ironing board.

2. Use Bins and Baskets

Bins and baskets can be used to organize laundry soap, fabric softener, dryer sheets and bleach. Baskets and bins are also useful for sorting clothing by color and washing temperature. If you have the room for it, consider a shelving unit with individual laundry baskets for each member of the family. Or, you could have separate baskets for clothing and household linens. A plastic bin placed on the floor can be used to collect heavily soiled clothes that you want to keep separate from the rest of your laundry, while canvas covered storage bins are great for collecting mismatched socks. Use small baskets to store extra buttons, a sewing kit and stain removers.

3. Make a Lint Box

A small trash bin mounted to the wall can serve as a convenient place to store bits of dryer lint and used fabric softener sheets until garbage day. Add a personal touch to your lint box by covering it with decorative adhesive paper or painting it in a color that matches your laundry room.

4. Install a Pull-Out or Pull-Down Drying Rack

Whether you want to protect delicate clothing, save energy or simply prefer to air-dry your laundry, installing the right drying rack will help on wash day. Pull-out and pull-down drying racks are the ideal space-saving solutions for small laundry rooms, as they take up no floor space and fold up or away after use. Many styles of pull-out and pull-down racks are available that can be mounted on a wall, from the ceiling or under a floating shelf.

5. Use Washer and Dryer Pedestals

Not only do laundry pedestals add needed height to front-loading machines, but they are also great for storing detergent bottles, laundry baskets and cleaning supplies. Best of all, pedestals require no extra floor space, as they fit right under your washer and dryer. Pedestals are available in several different styles, including open-faced designs that allow you to stow laundry baskets within easy reach.

6. Install Floating Shelves

The vertical space in a laundry room is often under-utilized. One good way to make the most of your wall space is to install floating shelves. They can be used for organizing cleaning supplies, displaying decorative items or even storing household linens like sheets and towels.

7. Use a Three-Hamper Sorting System

Place three hampers in the laundry room and use them to pre-sort your white, light and dark-colored clothing. Using a three-bag sorting system will save time on wash day; when it comes time to put a load in, you can simply grab a hamper and dump its entire contents into the washer. To make sorting even easier, you can print up labels and affix them to the hampers so everyone in the family knows what to put in each hamper.

With a bit of planning and creativity, you can transform your laundry room into a streamlined utility room that helps saves time on wash day. Who knows? After putting these organization tips to use, laundry day may even become your favorite day.
