What is Jacquard Bedding?

Jacquard bedding is made of textured fabric woven on a special loom. The first of these looms was invented in 1801 by Joseph Marie Jacquard in the midst of the weaving revolution sweeping Britain and Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Clothing and fabric manufacturers wanted cheaper ways to mass produce fine hand-embroidered and quilted fabrics. These companies formed societies that sponsored fabulous contests. Tempting prizes encouraged inventors to create innovative sewing and weaving processes. Profits hinged on innovation so manufacturers were happy to offer inspiration. Everyone from Parisians to American colonists wanted the rich brocades and sumptuous quilted fabrics sewn by French seamstresses. Jacquard looms and matelasse-style fabrics were invented as cheaper substitutes for fabrics too costly and time-consuming to mass produce by hand. Today, jacquard looms produce not only jacquard fabrics but also luxurious brocade, damask, matelasse and tapestry cloth.

Each one of the loom-woven fabric styles has a variation that sets it apart. Jacquard is recognized by having the same pattern mirrored on both sides of the fabric. Modern jacquard bedding features geometric and abstract shapes in the woven patterns. When the fabric has mirrored images on both sides and is heavy, it’s called damask. The underside of brocade has many short threads that barely resemble the precise pattern on the opposite side. When you order a jacquard sham, bed covering or decorative pillow, the fabric cover is made of modern jacquard, which is a lightweight, draping fabric with a raised pattern that catches the light. Contemporary jacquard bedding is often made of pieced fabrics, using jacquard applique or pieces of jacquard to create the designs.

Jacquard is traditionally made of silk, but rayon and synthetic fabrics are also used. At west elm, we offer jacquard duvet covers in 100 percent organic cotton for a healthy and cozy sleep. Many of our jacquard bedding fabrics are certified to Global Organic Textile Standards and made in Fair Trade Certified facilities so you can feel good about feeling so cozy and stylish in your private oasis. Choose matching jacquard shams to coordinate with your duvet covers or mix and match fabrics and designs to create your own bedroom look.

Jacquard bedding offers a sophisticated and precise weave that offsets softer fabrics including velvet and sateen. Jacquard bedding components are an ideal choice for guest rooms and minimalist bed decor because of the subdued colors and soothing patterns. Use jacquard bedding wherever you want subtle texture and classic style. Choose colors and designs to match mid-century furnishings or urban decor. Jacquard designs mingle with cottage and vintage themes when you add touches of natural materials like bone, fur and stone. Use pieced or full jacquard duvet covers layered with solid-color TENCEL® or silk bedding sets for tasteful contrast and interesting textures in your sleep spot.

Jacquard bedding is manufactured with modern motifs and thread styles that mix with more traditional and exotic colors and patterns or stand alone as the sole source of color in a minimalist space. Care for jacquard bedding as advised on the use and care label. If the jacquard is machine washable, use cold or warm water and no bleach products. Most jacquard bedding may be dry cleaned, but check the tag to be sure.
