Decorating with White Bedding

Adding white bedding to your bedroom opens up a world of design possibilities. You have the freedom to create a traditional, elegant look or something modern and bright, making your bedroom a space where you can’t wait to relax after a long day. The brightness of white easily cheers up the room, even during evenings or rainy days. The bed is the focal point of your bedroom. After you’ve selected white bedding, it’s time to decorate around it to polish off and complete the space exactly how you want it. With these ideas from us at west elm, you can design a bedroom that showcases your style and sense of taste while providing the comfort you need.

Directing the Eye

You might sometimes hear designers talk about the lines in a space. This refers to the general shapes and silhouettes of the furniture in the room, but your bedding can also play a role. Victorian furniture styles tend to feature rounded lines, for example, but the traditional aspect of crisp, clean white bedding creates very definitive straight lines. Keep this is mind as you start to decorate and plan your bedroom space. If you prefer sleek, straight lines, add modular, modern night tables and dressers to enhance the linear effects of simple white bedding. If you prefer something softer, select textured, ruffled white bedding. Pick out furniture with swooping lines for a more eclectic look – add a barrel chair and an oval-shaped nightstand.

A Color Story

One of the best things about white bedding is that it looks great in every season. It also serves as an ideal blank canvas for any other colors you want to introduce in your bedroom. You can change accent pillows and throws on a monthly basis if you want. White bedding blends in with every hue, no matter what you decide to use. Add accompaniments to your white bedding to make this happen. For example, pastel toss pillows are a great way to welcome spring. A warm beige or light orange flannel throw is a nice touch atop your white comforter as fall approaches. Use white bedding throughout all of these seasons – or with your preferred colors year-round – and it’ll always offer a timeless, elegant touch.

When it comes to furniture color, the choice is completely up to you. A bedroom with a darker wall color – like navy blue or brown – looks formal and beautiful with all-white decor. This includes white bedding, white furniture and white window treatments. If your walls are white or off-white, teak and warm beiges are good color choices for furniture. Espresso and chocolate colors are also a possibility; their contrast creates both warmth and coolness. Because white offers a crisp feeling, it’s a wonderful idea to add fresh room scents for a finishing touch. Opt for essential oil room diffusers so the space delights all your senses.

Cleaning Tips

Keeping white bedding clean and crisp is essential. For your bedding to maintain a bright tone over time, try these easy-to-follow laundry tips. Try to avoid bleach, which can cause the linens to discolor. Instead, add a half-cup of baking soda to your washer load along with the detergent. As the bedding enters the rinse cycle, add a half-cup of white vinegar. Don’t worry – the scent will disappear before the load is finished. And, the vinegar will return your white sheets to their brand-new feel. You can also add a scoop of borax or oxygen brightener to the wash cycle. For an even crisper, cleaner texture, line-dry your white sheets and blankets outdoors in the sun during the summer. The sun will naturally provide a bit of extra bleaching power.

White brightens and lightens a room and as you can see from our tips, fits with just about any style and décor.
