Beds

A high quality bed is your ticket to a restful night’s sleep. So, choosing a new bed is one of the more important furnishing decisions you’ll make when furnishing or redecorating your home. You can find beds in all kinds of shapes and sizes, ranging from compact twin sizes with minimalist frames to spacious king sizes with lots of storage. west elm offers a wide variety of styles, ranging from classic to modern.

Size is one of the most important things you need to consider when choosing a new bed frame. If you are replacing an existing bed, this step can be fairly easy, as you can simply choose the same size. However, if you are choosing a new bed and mattress for a new space, you should opt for a frame that fits well in the room. The bed should offer enough space to sleep comfortably while allowing access to dressers and wardrobes. If you are not sure what size works best, use masking tape to mark out the dimensions on the floor. This should give you a good idea of how the bed will fit in the room. Beds come in standard sizes, including twin, full, queen and king. This makes it easy to choose a size before you start shopping. Twin and full beds can comfortably accommodate a single person, whereas queen and king frames are ideal for couples.

Height can also play a role in your bed choice. Some people prefer to sleep higher up off the ground, whereas others prefer to sleep closer to the floor. The length of a bed’s legs can determine how high the mattress sits, so look at these first. A deep mattress can also help you sleep higher up off of the floor. Frames themselves can range from low profile to high. High canopy beds can look glamorous in spacious bedrooms, and adding textiles such as curtains help you set up a cozy sleeping space. Lower frame heights are ideal for smaller spaces, as they create an open atmosphere.

Materials are another thing to think about while you are at the shopping stage. Different materials suit different decor styles, so it is a good idea to choose something that works with your existing furniture. Wood is a popular material, as it is sturdy and easy to pair with sheets, duvets and throw pillows. You can find wood beds in natural or painted finishes. If you are choosing a natural finish and already have wood dressers or nightstands, choose a finish that closely matches these pieces. Upholstered beds are another option. Upholstered headboards are comfortable and add extra cushioning. Upholstered frames also lend a luxurious look to your room. Metal frames are sleek and minimalist, so they work well with modern decor schemes.

If your bedroom space is limited, you may want to consider storage options when choosing a new bed. Under-bed storage expands limited closet or dresser space. Frames with taller legs can accommodate large baskets or bins. Our collections also offer several frames with built-in drawers, which can help you stay organized. If you are furnishing a guest room, you may want to choose a piece that can do double duty when you are hosting friends and family. Daybeds make excellent options, as you can use decorative pillows and throws to make them look like sofas.

After you have chosen a new bed, you may also want to think about accessories. If your new frame is a different size than your previous bed, you should also purchase a new mattress and bedding. You may also want to pick up some new sheets and quilts if the new bed features a drastically different style. For example, if you chose an upholstered frame, you may want to pick up bedding that complements the color and texture of the fabric. If you want to add baskets or boxes underneath a higher bed, you can use a bed skirt to conceal the storage area.
