Window treatments play an important part in the overall decor in every room, and they also add usefulness. Depending on the type of room you are decorating – from the bedroom to living room and kitchen – the type of window panels, curtains and shades you choose, may naturally vary according to the room’s functions and your needs and preferences. For example, in your bedroom, you may want thicker coverage for more privacy, while in your living room, you may want thinner, sheer curtains for a flowing look. As there are more than just curtains and drapes to choose from, you can also use shades to let in as little or as much light as you want. At west elm, we have everything you need to put the finishing touches on the overall design that you have chosen for each room of your home through our window treatments.

When it comes to curtains and drapes, the type of fabric construction you choose is an important consideration. Cotton curtains are one of the most popular fabrics for curtains, as many cotton curtains are machine washable, easy to care for and are available in a myriad of styles and colors that easily complement any room or space, from your bedroom to your entryway. Look for cotton curtains in delicate patterns, solid bright colors or neutral hues to match your existing decor.

Linen is a similar type of fabric that works well as the primary material in curtain- and drape-making, but it is woven from a flax plant as opposed to a cotton seed. A little thicker, linen curtains add more texture to the room. For the ultimate in texture and comfort, Belgian flax linen curtains are a terrific choice. Other types of fabric include velvet, which is lovely for a romantically-styled bedroom, and jacquard, which is luxurious to the touch. Most of the available curtains come as only one panel, while others are readily available as a set of two to complete your window treatment. For those who desire extra coverage, including blocking out of harmful UV rays, blackout curtains and panels are a good choice. These are often available as a choice for any other fabric you’re shopping for. For instance, you may opt for a Belgian flax linen panel, but easily add a blackout panel behind it, so you have both the style you want as well as coverage.

Shades are an excellent way to ensure you have privacy when you need it, but also give you the ability to open your window treatments wide, letting in fresh air and light. Choose pull-down shades for complete coverage, or opt for blinds, which are tiltable, adding in as little or as much light as you like. Blinds are often available in white or off-white colors, but to complement decor, they are also available in neutral hues such as beige, or deeper colors such as espresso. Blinds and shades are often excellent choice for kitchens and bathrooms, but coordinate well in any room of the home. For coverage plus elegance, pair your favorite blinds with your favorite set of drapes or curtains, offering you quite a few options on bright, sunny days, or when you need privacy.

All of the available curtains and drapes work with our window hardware, which is sold separately. Choose from different rods, knobs, rings and other hardware to completely polish off your look in each room. Not only does the window hardware pair well with available drapes and curtains, all of the hardware is incredibly easy to install, making it a breeze when it comes to window treatment installation time. Many finishes for hardware are available, such as brass, copper and nickel, offering you a contemporary touch that subtly blends in with your drapes, blinds or curtains.
