Installing inside mount blinds and shades

Interior mount blinds, also known as inside mounts, provide a clean look for your window treatments. This common style is a surefire way to create a tailored look that spotlights window hardware and moldings. Here’s how to measure windows for blinds and shades:

Step 1: Measure the window depth

First, measure from the front of the window opening to the glass. This will ensure the window has enough depth to accommodate the inside mount shades or blinds.

Step 2: Measure the window width

Next, measure the inner width of your window casing at the top of the window. This will help you determine what size headrail you’ll need — this is the part of the shades that houses the mechanism.

Once you have this measurement, you can choose the correct size headrail. Choose a width that’s three-eighths inches smaller than the window, rounding down to the nearest inch.

Step 3: Measure the window height

Measure the height of your window, starting from the top of the window and measuring to the top of the sill. You’ll need to take this measurement in three places: on the left, in the middle and on the right. Take the longest measurement of the three as your window’s height — this will be your shade’s length.

Every window has its own natural variations, so choosing the longest measurement will ensure you have plenty of shade — better to have a little too much than not enough!

Once you have your window measurements down, be sure they’re in the correct order when it comes to width and length. This will ensure as you start shopping, you get correctly sized shades for your windows and won’t need to return them.

That’s it! Easy, right? Now it’s time to go shopping.

Types of window shades and blinds

When you start looking at window shades and blinds, you’ll find that there are plenty of options to consider. Here are some of the most common types.

Roman shades

Clean, sleek and classic, Roman shades can adapt to any space and style. Fixed with fabric for a comfortable look and extra light-blocking capabilities, these shades offer a cordless design for ease of use and child safety.

Roller shades

It doesn’t get much easier than a roller shade! This cordless style is known for its light-blocking abilities and clean look. Let them stand alone for a modern take or install them underneath curtains for extra light and temperature control.

To meet in the middle, a set of cellular shades offers the perfect amount of light filtering and insulation. With energy efficiency in mind, the honeycomb cell design traps air for home insulation. Plus, they allow just enough light in while still guaranteeing privacy.
