Decorating with Throw Blankets

Decorating with throw blankets is a fun and easy way to update your space. Bring in a vibrant shade to add a pop of color to your living room, or use neutral tones to tie different pieces together. Fold throws over the back of your sofa to add variety to your look and lend your space some cozy flair. Draping one over the armrest invites visitors to sit down and relax in the chair. Fold a throw over the foot of your bed or drape one over your headboard to draw more focus to that part of your bedroom. Add one to your sofa bed to make your guests comfortable when they’re visiting on a chilly night.

Fibers

Throw blankets come in several different fibers. Cotton is a very popular choice, as it’s versatile and comfortable. Cotton fiber creates soft, supple threads and yarns that work well with many different weaving and knitting styles. It’s easy to wash, breathes well and holds its shape over time. Linen is a good alternative to cotton. It has many of the same benefits as cotton, but it’s even more durable. It also absorbs moisture easily, so it’s an excellent fiber for summer throws. Wool is another common fiber in blankets. This material is very warm, which makes it excellent for keeping warm when the weather gets cold. Because it absorbs dye easily, it often comes in vibrant shades. Synthetic materials such as polyester and acrylic are easy to work into different fabrics, which makes them ideal for creating fabrics such as faux fur.

Textures

Blankets and throws are fantastic for bringing a bit of texture into your home. You can get creative with these accessories, since you can do a lot more with a smaller amount of fabric than you can with an entire sofa. Faux fur is excellent for creating a soft, cozy feel in your living room. This texture also adds warmth to spaces that feature a lot of sleek, classic lines. Chunky knits and loose basket weaves have similar effects. Drape these over leather sofas and chairs to soften up your decor or add them to a minimalist bedroom. If your upholstery features textured fabrics such as tweed or your sofa pillows already include a lot of color and texture, you can opt for a sleeker texture for your throws. Ribbed blankets, twill fabrics or tighter knits work well with these pieces.
