The most important piece of furniture you can add to your bedroom as you begin to outfit and decorate it is, of course, your bed. Choosing a bed and bed frame is usually the first step as you begin to design the room. The finishing embellishments, such as rugs, window treatments, wall art and decorative items, follow later as you use these decorative touches to enhance the space. Designing a bedroom with mid-century bedroom furniture gives the room a modern feel, especially when you accent it with other pieces, such as mid-century modern chairs, bedding sets, art and more. When you want those just-right pieces to make your bedroom the most comfortable space in the house, we at west elm have everything you need for adding that mid-century, retro flair to tie it all together.

Getting the Look

As you begin to peruse furniture, you may want to jot some color themes down that you think may work well for your bed choice and bedroom. Remember that smaller rooms often look wonderful with light-colored furniture because it creates the impression of an elongated room and makes the whole space look bigger. Bigger rooms don’t necessarily need dark colors and furniture, but it’s a novel idea if you want to make the room feel cozier, which is often a goal in a bedroom. For a smaller bedroom, you may want to opt for white or light-colored bed frames, while your bigger bedroom can look great with an espresso or black-colored frame.

The accessory furniture you use in the bedroom is important, too. Of course, there’s no rule that all your pieces must match; if you’re going for a distinctly modern look, you might want to make sure they don’t look too similar. Adding a chifforobe is a great idea to complement your modern bed frame. A chifforobe or armoire is a neat way to store clothing, while also saving space and adding another beautiful design element to the room. You may want to opt for a chifforobe or wardrobe that fits flat against the wall, or perhaps you want to go for a freestanding wardrobe or garment rack for an open-air feel. No matter how you place your wardrobe, this extra piece of furniture works exceedingly well with your bed frame, dressers and nightstands.

Storing Extras

In addition to the furniture ensemble you’ve already created for the room, you may find that you need an extra storage solution or two. In this case, opting for small dresser drawers and units is a wise choice. Look for finishes that match your existing ensemble, such as wood grain, beige, espresso or white, and neatly tuck these small units into a corner, or even a closet, if you’re short on space. These small dressers are ideal for intimates, socks and other comfort items you want to keep close at hand.

Once you’ve decided on your complete furniture ensemble and you’re delighted with the look, it’s time to think about modern bedding sets. At the heart of your needs is comfort, but beyond that, you want colors and patterns you enjoy seeing day after day. There’s nothing quite like sinking into fresh linens after a long day at work or with the family. Again, remember dark colors for large spaces and light colors for small spaces to create contrast. Look for organic yet soft pieces that are machine washable and easy to care for, such as our Belgian flax or organic cotton. Complete sheet sets are a great idea, with soft flannel being a cozy choice in winter and light cotton or linen a cool summer choice. It’s always a good idea to layer your bedding. Start out with sheets you love to feel against your skin and with pillowcases that match. Next, a few decorative shams and a duvet cover add softness to the bed. For the coldest of nights, a warm throw or a light quilt provides comfort but fits in fabulously with your modern styling.
