Decorating with White for the Holidays
An all-white holiday theme brings the peace and renewal of a winter snowfall inside. Everything looks clean and refreshing. The biggest part about assembling an all-white display is the number of nuanced shades that are designated as "white." Everything from bleached white to eggshell to champagne may be called white, so all of your holiday decor may not perfectly match. No worries, however. With a large white display, the various hues will blend together and give you the open, pure look you. Use clear or LED string lights to accent pieces that you want to highlight, along with these tips from us at west elm.
Start at the front entry with your all-white theme. Light-up white trees and reindeer scattered on the front walkway begin the magic. Use white holiday lighting along the front path and along railings for a dramatic effect. A doormat adorned with snowflakes provides a white welcome. Order white outdoor decor including wreaths and garlands lit up with white LED lights to frame and accent your porch, door and entryway. White battery-operated candles in each of the front windows is also a lovely touch that gives a serene yet joyful look to your home.
Adding just the right accent color to your white decorations can actually bring out the gleam of white decor. Some people use pale blue or lavender as an accent color to emphasize a cool look. Silver is also a common addition to white-themed holiday displays. Blue, lavender and silver evoke a frozen, snowy sense of winter. For a warmer seasonal approach, use white ornaments and decor with a woodland or rustic charm. Houses, animals and other miniatures in all-white are enhanced by accents in pine-green, red and bark-brown. Spray paint white tree branches and set in pots for more indoor glimpses of nature. Deck the branches with white ribbons, ornaments and candy canes. For a modern look to white decor, use ornaments in black and gold, black and pink or bright fuchsia and chartreuse on a white tree.
It's easy to find all-white dinnerware for a clean holiday table. Use plates, serving platters and linens in all-white for a cohesive white look. Lanterns or centerpieces highlighted with white or clear string lights make it seem as if you're dining on a snowdrift. Use gold, pale blue or silver chargers under white plates to add a hint of color and luxury to sit-down holiday dinners. Serve white drinks and soup to begin the feast and a white dessert to end the meal.
Items in clear, glittering or reflective surfaces also add interest to white holiday decorations. Choose from clear, mirrored and glitter-bedecked trees that give every holiday display a festive and crisp glimmer. Garland also look great as buffet-table and entryway accents. Use a white garland with silver balls or a clear LED globe-light garland down a staircase banister or above a doorway for a dramatic white effect. White and silver garlands also look great when arranged along a buffet table, bar, fireplace or entertainment center.
Don't forget the white stockings to hang by the fireplace. Choose a different knit, fur, beaded or fleece stocking for each family member to avoid confusion. You can have each household member's name monogrammed on their stocking to avoid confusion if all of the white stockings are the same. Silver weighted stocking holders reflect the white of the stockings. Use a white tree skirt to highlight the white tree and ornaments and maintain continuity in the holiday room's appearance. Choose from white tree skirts in velvet, faux fur, faux sheepskin and faux alpaca. Select a white quilted tree skirt monogrammed with your family's name or initials. Wrap presents in all-white or silver paper to create a gleaming tree arrangement..
