How to Make a Baby's Bed

The crib serves as the focal point of your nursery, which means that your choice of bedding is important. The crib bedding can set the theme of your room, whether you're focusing on soft neutral hues, bright patterns or cute characters. In addition to serving as a decorative accent in the room, the crib bedding also promotes comfort when your baby sleeps. As a result, setting up your baby's crib is an essential step in creating a functional and stylish nursery. Take time to make your baby's bed the right way, which means it will look its best and function well. Follow these tips as you prepare to decorate your baby's nursery.

Crib Bedding Essentials

Outfit the crib with the right pieces to create a comfortable sleep environment for your baby. Like any bed, a crib requires several key pieces to complete the bedding. Secure the following items before you make your baby's bed:

  • Waterproof crib mattress pad: As the bottom layer of your crib bedding, this mattress pad protects the mattress against any unwanted accidents. It repels moisture, allowing you to keep the mattress dry.
  • Fitted crib sheet: Stock up on crib sheets, which is what your baby will sleep on. The sheet should feature elastic corners, which ensure the sheet stays securely on the mattress.
  • Quilt: The quilt can accessorize the crib, adding a decorative touch when draped over the crib rails. The quilt, however, should be removed before baby goes to sleep.
  • Crib Skirt: The crib skirt adds a finishing touch to the bottom of the crib. It sits under the mattress on top of the crib base.

Setting Up the Crib Bedding

Once you've invested in crib bedding that you love, you're ready to get the crib set up for your baby. First, of course, your crib needs to be fully assembled. Have the crib mattress on hand, but keep it outside of the crib for now. Then, follow these steps to set up your baby's crib bedding:

  • 1. Position the crib skirt on the crib. The crib skirt will feature a top rectangular piece that sits on top of the crib's bottom frame. Align this piece to the base and let the skirt fall. Make sure all of the pieces fall naturally and evenly from the crib base for a uniform look.
  • 2. Place the crib mattress on the bed. The crib mattress can lie directly on top of the crib base that is now covered by the skirt.
  • 3. Place the fitted sheet on the mattress. Pull the elastic ends of the sheet over each corner of the crib mattress, ensuring a snug fit. Make sure each end of the crib sheet sits under the mattress.
  • 4. Add decorative touches. Place a folded quilt over one end of the crib or on the crib rails. Always remove this decorative accessory before your baby goes to sleep.

Baby Bedding Frequently Asked Questions

Simplify shopping for baby bedding by considering the answers to these frequently asked questions.

How many crib sheets do I need?

Chances are you'll change your baby's crib sheets quite frequently. Accidents can and do occur, which can result in some middle-of-the-night sheet changes after your baby wakes up wet. As a result, you want to have at least three pairs of crib sheets on hand. That way, you'll always have a clean sheet on the bed and a clean sheet ready to be used, even if another one is in the laundry.

How do I keep my baby warm at night?

Babies should not sleep with blankets. However, that doesn't mean they can't be comfortable on a chilly night. Wearable blankets and sleep sacks are ideal for babies. These pieces can be worn over a sleeper, providing an extra layer of warmth. They zip or snap on and off, making any middle-of-the-night diaper changes easier.

Does my crib need a flat sheet?

Unlike other bedding, cribs do not require a flat sheet. The fitted sheet is all that your baby needs for a restful night's sleep.

Should my baby use a pillow?

No, pillows are not necessary for babies and should always be kept out of the crib when the baby is in it.

What type of mattress do I need?

Crib mattresses should be firm, which means they provide the right level of support for your sleeping baby.

Making your baby's bed is the first step in designing a nursery that both you and your baby will love. A durable waterproof mattress pad and comfortable fitted crib sheet are the key pieces that your baby needs to rest. Other pieces, including a crib skirt and quilt, add a decorative touch to your baby's bed. Select a pattern, color or theme that speaks to you and create a nursery especially for your baby.
