Get Ready

Before tackling a kitchen mess, gather all necessary supplies so that everything you need to get the job done is close at hand. A caddy or even a basket can be used to corral all of your cleaning supplies and provides easy portability.

Basic Kitchen Cleaning Supplies

You don't have to spend a lot on cleaning supplies for your kitchen. If you're the DIY type, you can even make your own nontoxic cleaners for the home. Take a look:

  • Countertop Cleaner -- There are cleaning products on the market that are specifically made for countertops. If you prefer a natural, non-toxic cleaner for your countertops, combine equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and simply spray and wipe with a paper towel or lightly dampened sponge. Avoid using harsh, abrasive cleansers to prevent scratches.
  • Glass Cleaner -- White vinegar can also be used to remove dirt and smudges from glass surfaces and chrome appliances. Or, you can opt for a store-bought cleaner designed for glass, or choose an all-purpose cleaner that works for multiple surfaces.
  • Wood Cleaner -- Cabinets can develop a greasy, grimy buildup over time. To remove it, create a cleansing paste with coconut oil and baking soda. Combine the two ingredients until a gritty consistency is formed, then apply it to cabinets with a soft, dry cloth in a circular motion and wipe away with a dampened cloth.
  • Floor Cleaner -- The right cleaner for your kitchen floor depends on the type of floor you have. For hardwood floors, choose a product made for use on wood that cleans and polishes. Laminate floors can be cleaned with an all-purpose solution, or you can make your own with a bucket of hot water, a cup of white vinegar and a teaspoon of dish detergent.
  • Wall Cleaner -- Cooking grease and grime can accumulate on the walls of your kitchen over time. Use a damp cleaning eraser to whisk away residue and make your walls look like new without the need for any cleanser.

Cleaning Appliances

The right way to clean your appliances depends on the type of appliances you have and the manufacturer's recommended cleaning instructions.

Most coffeemakers can be cleaned with white vinegar. Simply run half vinegar and half water through your coffeemaker as if you were brewing coffee, then finish up with a cycle of clear water to remove any vinegar residue.

To remove stuck-on food from the inside of your microwave, put a few tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl of water and microwave it for three minutes. Allow it to sit for ten minutes or so before opening the microwave. The steam from the water and baking soda will soften and penetrate stuck on messes, so all you have to do is wipe them away with a damp sponge.

Work From Top to Bottom

An efficient strategy when cleaning the kitchen is to work from top to bottom. Start with the highest point and clean from there, so dirt falls to the floor to be disposed of last. If you're in a hurry, a quick wipe-down can go a long way towards boosting the cleanliness of your kitchen.

Dampen a paper towel, sponge or cleaning cloth with your preferred cleaning solution and wipe the cabinets, range hood and on top of the refrigerator. Then, you can work down to the countertops, appliances and floors. If you've got a lot of dirt, change your cleaning towel frequently.

Try Effort-Saving Tools

There are ways to make cleaning the kitchen faster and easier. For example, while you can scrub the floor on your hands and knees, a good mop can get the job done faster with less exertion. There are even motorized mops that dispense cleanser and easily remove dirt and grime.

To clean high surfaces like the top of the refrigerator or upper cabinets, use a duster with a long or telescoping handle. Many modern dusters are made with dirt-attracting materials that pull and trap particles for cleaner surfaces and cleaner air.

Add Elegant Touches

A clean kitchen deserves a stylish touch. west elm has everything from designer dish towels to marble paper towel holders, so it's easy to enhance your kitchen with functional elegance.
